Before it goes to a final vote, there are opportunities for Commissioners to make amendments to the Joint Office of Homeless Services 2023 budget. Let them know: in order to support our unhoused neighbors, we must invest in proven solutions.

There are several specific policy actions outlined in the 2022 HereTogether Roadmap that, if funded as proposed in the current budget, will have an impact on our region’s homeless crisis. These include:

  • Keep transitional housing as a temporary and effective option by connecting people to services. Doing so requires adequate funding for the supportive services that are necessary to help people transition from a shelter as quickly as possible, including case management, housing vouchers and flexible funding.

  • Strengthen our region’s social service workforce by investing in living wage compensation for our case managers, peer support specialists and other frontline staff.

  • Engage the private market to increase housing stock. As outlined in our Roadmap, there are myriad ways to quickly leverage the private market to bring affordable housing online. This includes expediting the Regional Long Term Rent Assistance Program by more effectively collaborating with private landlords. The “Move In Multnomah" program is a great pilot for this type of work.
